He’s also a builder of creative “clubs” for readers and writers. He founded McSweeney's (known for its quirky humor and beautifully designed books) and helped start 826 Valencia, which grew into 826 National. 826 National is a nonprofit network of free writing and tutoring centers for young people. It helps kids and teens build confidence with writing through after-school homework help, creative writing workshops, in-school programs, and field trips He also co-founded Voice of Witness, which shares real people’s stories in their own words.

Among other recognition, he has been awarded the 2024 Newbery Medal for The Eyes and the Impossible. He’s married to novelist Vendela Vida, and they live in San Francisco with their two children.
